Toughened or tempered glass is a type of safety glass processed by controlled thermal or chemical treatments to increase its strength compared with normal glass. Tempering creates balanced internal stresses which cause the glass, when broken, to crumble into small granular chunks instead of splintering into jagged shards. The granular chunks are less likely to cause injury.  

 

 

 

The heat-treating process consists of heating glass in a high-temperature furnace (1,150º F / 621º C) then rapidly cooling it by blowing air on both surfaces. This cooling process locks the surfaces of the glass in a state of compression and the core in compensating tension. The resulting glass is strengthened.

Toughening process

1. Involves heating and cooling treatment whereby high compressive stresses are set up at the surfaces with balancing tensile stresses in the center.

2. Improves the glass strength against impact and thermal stress loads.

Characteristic

1.    Strong intensity: 4- 5 times stronger than annealed glass against impact.

2.    Safety: when breakage occurs, the tempered glass disintegrates into small obtuse fragments, which reduces the risk of injury.

3.    Thermal resistance: It can withstand a very wide range of rapid temperature changing with the endurance of 200-300°C.

Charateriatics:

 

Fully tempered glass :

Is four times stronger than comparable annealed glass;

  • The surface compression exceeds 10,000 PSI (68,9 MPa);

  • Retains its colour, chemical and light transmission properties after treatment;

  • Under impact, shatters in small fragments that are not sharp, minimizing the risk of serious injury;

  • Must be cut and edged before the heat-treating process.

 

Heat strengthened glass :

  • Is generally twice as strong as comparable annealed glass;

  • The surface compression may reach 3,500 to 7,500 PSI (25-50 MPa);

  • Retains its colour, chemical and light transmission properties after treatment;

  • Under impact, shatters in fragments whose size and sharpness vary depending on the degree of surface compression during treatment;

  • Must be cut and edged before the heat-treating process.

Notes :

  • Under certain lighting conditions, a pattern of iridescent spots and darker shadows may be observed. This phenomenon is called the “strain pattern” and is caused by the stress introduced during the cooling process.

  • Bow, warp, optical distortion and strain pattern are inherent characteristics of heat-treated glass and do not constitute a manufacturing fault. Despite measures taken to minimize these conditions, they cannot be completely eliminated. ASTM C 1048 and CAN/CGSB 12.1 standards define these tolerances.

  • Glazing applications in areas where personal safety is essential such as entrances, staircases, guardrails, mezzanines, sports arenas and other public areas

 

Heat strengthened glass :

  • Glazing applications that require increased resistance to stress and thermal shock because of simultaneous exposure to zones of shade and intense sunlight.
